About Salette Andrews

Salette Andrews is a writer, researcher, and health educator who specializes in helping people understand complex information and use it to make informed decisions. She holds a master’s degree in Technical Communication Management from Mercer University’s School of Engineering and has worked professionally as a technical communicator and educator.

Her interest in bone health became personal when she was diagnosed with osteoporosis. Faced with treatment decisions she did not feel prepared to make, she began doing what she had spent much of her professional life doing: researching a complicated subject, examining the evidence, and translating what she learned into language that ordinary people could understand and use.

That research became Strong Bones: The Science of Bone Health at Every Age.

A patient’s perspective

I am not a physician, and Strong Bones is not a substitute for medical advice. I wrote it from a different perspective: that of a patient trying to understand the evidence well enough to participate meaningfully in decisions about her own health.

My background in technical communication taught me to ask how information is supported, what the evidence actually shows, where uncertainty remains, and how complex ideas can be explained without oversimplifying them. My experience as a health educator taught me something equally important: people make better decisions when they understand not just what they are being advised to do, but why.

Strong Bones does not tell readers what treatment decision to make. It is designed to help them understand the questions behind those decisions—what their test results mean, what their individual fracture risk may be, what treatments can and cannot do, and what they can do for themselves to protect their bones.
